There was a time (not very long ago) when I didn’t have a clue about care icons and certainly didn’t refer to them for the care of my garments. I’ve always relied upon common sense, developed through some bitter disappointments (think perfect iron singes on clothes and misadventures with bleach).
Caring for equestrian clothing (breeches, jodphurs, riding pants or whatever you may call them), is really not a lot different to caring for any other garment. Luckily they all come with instructions, if we know where to find them and how to read them.
Here's a brief summary:
Sometimes you’ll see the same icon, but it will have dots to indicate warmth. One dot = 30⁰, 2 dots = 40⁰, etc.
Water at 30⁰ is not very hot, in fact it’s less than lukewarm.
The dot system is as described above and pretty easy to understand.
If you’ve ever scorched a garment you’ll understand why you really should heed this advice, but the feel of the fabric is a good indicator of what temperature you’d need. In this case, make it as low as you can!
Righto! And why go to that expense if it isn’t recommended?
The solvents and chemicals used in dry cleaning can be toxic and over time can be damaging to some fabrics. The fabric in your breeches is one of them, so please don’t.
This means it can be put in the clothes dryer, not that it should be!
And again, with the cost of electricity why would you?
This one is a lot like the dry cleaning. The bleach will break down the fabric in your riding pants – don’t do it – please!
That’s a pretty long list of things not to do. But it basically comes down to heat and chemicals, you want to avoid both.
So, here’s what I do to care for my riding pants, remembering that I’m a lazy (and frugal) housewife.
Firstly, I always wash in cold water. I read somewhere that hot water will set a stain, so I tell myself that’s the reason, truth is I’m not paying for hot water unless I need to.
I don’t own a clothes dryer and instead I line dry my riding pants, in the shade! In fact, I line dry everything in the shade.
If I’m riding at home on my own arena or on a trail ride, I don’t bother to iron. My horses don’t seem to mind, and it doesn’t seem to take long for the creases to fall out anyway. Just like denim jeans really.
However, if I’m going out somewhere I do take a little more care.
Instead I use a steamer. Not a fancy one either, I think I got mine from Kmart and from memory it was about $35(ish). And I only ever steam from about mid-thigh down.
Soooo, that’s it. I like to keep thing quick, simple and easy.
Well, I tend to choose the darker colours anyway so it’s not really an issue for me. I do have some trail riding pants in wheat and in all honesty, other than normal day to day marks they haven’t stained. But if they had I would use a warm water soak.
25 year on from babies, and I still have nappy soaker in my laundry.
Follow these instructions and your Proud Horse Riding Pants should last a very, very long time.

Just wondering if these come in shorter lengths. As someone else commented hemming changes the look

Do these pants come in petite length? Short inseam for short people? Hemming always ruins the look. Thanks

I purchased the Horizon Riding Jeans because I don't look good in breeches (who does?) but wanted extra support in the saddle. SUCCESS! For those of you Ladies out there who are looking for a practical, comfortable AND good-looking pair of riding pants, this is it! Beautifully made, super comfortable, practical AND I look good! What? I didn't think it was possible! Now me and my little paint horse can ride and we both look sharp! Thank you! Claudia from Pennsylvania, USA
Beautiful shirt, great quality and great fit.
I really like these pants. They’re well made and look made to last.. they have a wonderful stretch and are quite comfortable. They allow for easy movement in and out of the saddle.
Lighter and a little cooler than denim which is what I’ve been searching for. Wore them yesterday and they were all that was promised! I wish I would have gotten a size smaller, but I will wear a belt!
Nice shirt. (Wish I had ordered a size-up and the duties to Canada are a bummer.)
I ordered both Legend and Trainers pants. I ordered the wrong size and needed to size up. Colleen was super reactive and helpful and the exchange was made really quickly even though I'm located in France!
The pants look amazing, they are super comfy and I can't wait to try them on horse treks!
Great fit with a pretty design!
Fabulous fabric and fit just so flattering
Love the stretch and fit. Best riding pants I own for sure!
Love the suede- ish inside leg and seat!!!!
My 2nd pair, 1st pair straying away from the denim/navy ones & I'm glad I did! They are super comfortable for long rides & I'm able to wear them around camp/car ride home.
I will be saving up to get a 3rd pair at some point!
This is my 2nd riding shirt from Ride Proud and love the colours on the Alchemy shirt. The fabric is lovely and lightweight, as usual Colleen was very prompt in posting the shirt and received it the next week.
Highly recommend.
Love the horse shoe/ musical notes shirt. It fits well and very comfortable. The riding tights have a great feel; however, the large is a tad too big but was afraid the medium might be a tad too small. I ordered this set for a trail in Montana in a few weeks so I rather them be a little loose. Look forward to try other items.
I am sooo happy with this riding shirt that I think I’ll have to consider it as one of my smart casual’s when I’m off my horse. Wonderful product and very versatile!
Just received my Heritage riding pants. Love them. They look really smart. Fit is great except waist is a couple inches too big. This is always my problem though with nearly all pants because of my generous backside!
Comfortable to the Max!!
Heeps of compliments!!
Highly recommend!!

Hi Colleen
I’m saving my pants for ASH competition.
They are a great fit.
Can I spray the inside leg with stain remover??.
Thanks for the washing instructions.
